Physical Features Of The Corgi

The corgi is a small breed of dog that was commonly bred to herd sheep and livestock. The two specific varieties of dogs of the corgi breed have their origins in Wales. Both the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi are very popular to have as pets. One of the most famous people who owns this great breed of dog is Queen Elizabeth II who has had them for many years. The name Corgi has probably its origins in the ancient Welsh words Cor ci meaning dwarf dog.

The dogs of this breed were designed to help farmers with herding the small domestic animals near the house. These dogs were leading the animals within the farm by nipping them on their heels. Due to the fact that the Corgi was so low to the ground the dogs would very rarely be kicked by the agitated animals. As a curiosity, this is one of the few types of dogs that are used to herd geese.

The dogs of the Corgi breed are small of stature, strong, very fast and agile, as they were designed as working dogs. Nowadays, few people use Corgi dogs to herd their domestic animals, but as family pets they are very protective with children. The Corgi dogs will protect the members of their family fearless of any kind of threat. They have strong wills and can be stubborn sometimes, but this can be turned to your benefit through adequate training. They are very affectionate dogs, and are rarely boisterous making them ideal for smaller children, and elderly people.

Take care at how much you feed them, because they are greedy and can easily become overweight. There are distinctive differences between the two types of corgi wich otherwise may be considered quite similar. The Pembroke corgi is smaller, sturdier and less high than Cardigan. The Cardigan Corgi has a longer tail, and is a slightly larger breed of Corgi. Cardigan Corgis have also more elongated bones that makes this variety longer than the Pembroke Corgi dogs.

The coats of the dogs of the Corgi breed are double, the protective, external layer is dense and harsh and the lower layer is softer and keeps them warm. The Corgi’s head is similar to a fox, and you will often see white markings on their muzzles. Their ears are often pricked and stand proudly on their heads, enabling them to hear everything that is happening. The dogs of both varieties of the Corgi breed are healthy and may live cheerfully for many years.

Insure them a healthy diet, with less fat and provided in adequate quantities, and regular exercises every day and they will  live happy for 12 up to 15 years. Although they have small legs they will still need a good amount of exercise daily to keep them from getting bored and in active. They are agile dogs that love to learn new tricks and skills. They will easily learn everything you are teaching them, just to please you and to show every day what they have learned.
