Tips For The Aspiring Novice Horserider

I’ve got some tips for the aspiring novice horse rider. There are few thrills that can match horse riding, as long as safety norms are adhered to. Its a supreme reward to go flat out across a stretch of ground astride a horse, not to mention the warmth of the wonderful bond that can arise between rider and pony. A little effort at learning some basic riding guidelines before actually getting into the saddle can cut the learning curves by half.

Prior to going a-riding, learn all you can on the topic of pony breeds, colors, heights and other physical characteristics. Get acquainted with the way in which the English riding style differs from the Western one. After you are done with your research, go and hobnob with the pony you will be riding. Introduce yourself, break the ice, get going with a good, lasting, mutually trusting relationship.

The simplest way to handle horse riding is to remain cool. Never blow your top, if you do you will lose your horse’s trust and respect. Horses are extremely attuned to their rider’s moods, anger, fear, exhilaration, whatever. Avoid thinking negative around your pony. Even if you happen to feel some fear at your first few rides (something that is quite normal) and you are obsessed about how to stay on your horse, banish these thoughts from your consciousness when in your horse’s presence. He will sense them. Say relaxed, stay cool. If you should happen to feel the onset of nervousness or fear, take one or two deep breaths and completely refuse to entertain negative thoughts. Deep breathing slows the heart beat down and relaxes the individual. When you know you are in control, so will the pony.

When done with the ride, make sure to dismount from the horse’s left side.

It’ll be to your advantage to read up on some essential horse riding concepts before you really go in for your first riding lesson. You can go thru some of the excellent reading material on horse riding available on the web and in book stores. Focus on books that tell you everything you need to know prior to getting on a horse for your initial ride. After reading, absorb their lessons, you’ll find yourself maturing in the understanding of the fundamentals of horse riding. Master stuff like the perfect way to approach horses, the ideal way to mount and dismount, how to hold the reins and the general do’s and don’ts.
