Similarities And Differences Between American And British Shorthair Cats
Although you may not realize it, there’s a difference between American Shorthair pussies and British Shorthair cats. To compare both breeds, you've first got to look at the history of them.
British shorthair cats originated from the Brit domestic shorthair or Moggie, as they were called. In the late 1800’s, careful breeding brought them into what is now referred to as the British Shorthair. The coat of these cats is very dense and plush, permitting them to accommodate the English weather. Their voices are also really quiet and gentle.
American Shorthair cats are middle sized and have a powerful body. The head is broad and round and the ears are medium sized and set wide apart. These cats were considered as working cats, used to catch mice when originally brought to America (and called “mousers”). Their eyes are round and set far apart in accordance with the broad head. The coat on the American shorthair pussy-cat is considered to be all weather and isn't as dense or silky as their British shorthair counterparts.
The North American shorthair moggy is assumed to have been brought to America from Europe with the original settlers. There are records of shorthair cats being on the Mayflower and could have been among the 1st domestic pussies in The United States. Only in the 20th century did this kitty transform from an insignificant domestic pussy to a pedigreed type and is at present a moggy breed.
Both American and British Shorthair kitty body types are called semi-cobby. Cobby means compact, stocky, heavy boned, well muscled, short and wide. They've also got a distinctive shorter tail. They are believed to be low upkeep pussies in comparison to the longer haired type cats and adapt well to their environment. They can easily live in homes and roam outdoors or in apartments living inside full time. They're quiet and keep themselves to themselves although they can be extremely loving to their owners.
They are perfect for a family environment and live well with youngsters. Low keyed and laid back, they have excellent characters for this type of living.
The North American shorthair pussy-cat was recognized in 1906 by the CFA and called the Domestic Shorthair. It’s name was modified to the North American shorthair between 1960 and 1966.
