How To Treat Sores On Dogs
Dog or puppy skin lesions caused by pyoderma (bacterial infections) are the second most common skin condition in dogs behind flea bite allergy. Staphyloccoccusintermdius is the bacteria that causes any dog sores on leg.
Dogs are prone to bacterial skin infections. Veterinarians why this happens. Researchers hypothesize that the cause is due to variations in dog skin composition when put next to other pets. This includes openings at the hair follicle base which makes it easier for bacteria to enter the Dermis. Dog skin is also relatively thin when compared to other species.
Dog skin infection is characterized by several clinical symptoms. The lesions may affect the outer layer of the skin (negligible pyoderma) or into other layers,
Skin infections are often the result of other problems that are the real reason for the condition. Because of this, if only the infection is treated they will frequently reoccur since the underlying condition was not treated. Common primary conditions include food sensitivity,, parasitic skin disorders such as flea allergy, endocrine diseases such as Cushings disease, follicle abnormalities and fungal or yeast infections.
Misdiagnosis also plays a role, with a lot of vets missing mange as a cause. Indications of demodicosis include pyoderma or lacerations on the face. The disease also varies symptomatically depending on the dog being evaluated. Some long hair breeds often do not suffer from the hair loss seen in dogs with short hair. Last, congenital, solar induced skin disorders in susceptible breeds are often under diagnosed.
Treatment is dependant on the diagnosis. The choice of antibiotic is related to the bacteria found on the skin. The frequency and size of the dose prescribed will be based on the severity of the skin condition, and size of the dog, Under dosing is common in larger pets with over dosing in smaller breeds. Successful treatment also depends on owner participation. In human medicine, 40% of patients do not comply with physician instructions.
Dog sore treatment is a challenge when bacteria enters additional skin layers. This can lead to other complications like follicular rupture (rupture at the base of the hair follicles). Skin allergy or endocrine abnormalities complicates treatment (e.g.; hyperthyroidism) since these diseases call for treatment prior to being able to cure any skin sores.
