Training Beagles
Any beagle owner will tell you that beagle training can be hard work, but the rewards that come from persevering and improving your dog’s obedience are truly great. Because beagles are very intelligent, training them can be a bit more of a challenge than when dealing with other dog breeds.
You will always have to make sure that your dog remains engaged and interested during beagle training. These dogs do not like to become bored, otherwise they will just start to ignore you and do what they want. Keep training fresh and lively by mixing in games and also adding new exercises regularly. One of the most important aspects of beagle training that many new owners do not put enough emphasis on is consistency. Even if your training methods do not appear to work as you had hoped right away, you need to stay on track otherwise your beagle puppy will not realise that you are serious about what you are trying to get him to do.
When things don’t appear to be going your way during beagle training, try to not to direct any anger towards your dog. Always control any aggression and be sure not to shout at your dog or try to harm him. This is pretty much the worst thing you can try and do to get a beagle to obey you and it will never work out well.
If you do end up scaring your beagle during training this will only have a negative effect over the long term. You will always want to make a start with beagle training from the minute you first bring your dog into your home. If you don’t then he might think that the way he naturally behaves is ok and trying to teach him new behaviours could be confusing for him
Make sure you keep things simple for the first few weeks of beagle puppy training. There are plenty of each commands you can work on with your dog so he does not become confused. Some of the most common are heel, sit and stay. When he gets good at following these kinds of orders then you can be a bit more creative. Just remember not to rush things though, do not skip the basics before adding more difficult commands.
