The Light Leader Leash: A Dog Training Alternative

After I started training dogs, head or “harness” collars for dogs had been new on the market and all the rage. The Light Chief and the Halti are the 2 greatest known forms of dog head collars, and are sometimes discussed interchangeably though there are slight differences in the design and they are made by totally different companies. As a result of I’ve used the Gentle Chief extensively, though not completely, in my own expertise, I will concentrate on it.

What is it?

Versus traditional dog collars that go around the neck, the Mild Chief is a head harness that consists of a nylon nostril strap and neck strap. The lead is connected to a hoop at the finish of a brief strap that extends beneath the chin.

How does it work?

Each straps are designed to have a specific function. The nose loop is meant to imitate the follow of demonstrating pack dominance between {two} animals by firmly taking a dog’s muzzle of their own. The neck strap is intended to loosen up and calm the canine by mimicking the apply of a mother greedy her pups by the back of the neck. In addition, the strap applies pressure to the again of the neck as a substitute of the entrance of the throat.

Canines tend to reply to an applied force by exerting an opposing force, which is why they typically respond to a backwards pull of lead with more pulling! The Light Leader is designed to reverse this habits, and arrest forward movement when drive is exerted on the neck.

Most importantly, the lead allows the owner to manage the top of the dog, and –not unlike a horse’s bridle – if you happen to control the top you control the beast.

How efficient is it?

In my experience the Gentle Leader is extraordinarily efficient in correcting pulling, lunging, and jumping. I found it significantly efficient with house owners who prefer to run with their canine, but have to preserve them in line on populated paths and trails. It can be used to facilitate the fundamental obedience instructions resembling “sit” and “down.”

Although the product info notes that the collar will cease undesirable barking (through a fast tug of the lead that closes the dog’s mouth), I found the lead much less efficient on this regard.

No Remedy-All

As with every collar, you might want to monitor your canine’s reaction. Nobody machine will work for all. However before you decide up a choke chain or a prong collar, a Light Chief is value some serious consideration.
