African Wild Ass — Equus africanus

This species has got to survive: its name gives us so much entertainment! On a more serious note, this donkey-like species lives inside a troubled region of Africa where survival is difficult.

The scientific name of the African wild ass is Equus africanus, which indicates it is a member of the horse family; in fact, it is considered toward maintain the ancestor of the domestic donkey. Once found within a wide area encompassing the Sudan, Egypt, and Libya, current wild adult populations during Eritrea and Ethiopia number no more than fifty adults each. This has led the IUCN to list the African wild ass as a critically endangered species.

Geography and humans are on the way to blame for its decline. These animals inhabit a region known for drought. Humans hunt them near use their body parts for medicinal purposes. A third threat in the direction of the ass is inter-species breeding with the domestic donkey.

During 1969, Ethiopia established the Yan- gudi-Rassa National Park (4,731 km2 or 1,827 mi) and the Mille-Serdo Wild Ass Reserve (8,766 km2 or 3,385 mi) inside an effort in the direction of help protect the animal. Unfortunately, the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Organization does not have the funding or the resources in the direction of manage the reserves.
