Canine Communication — Communicating Effectively

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Dogs can recognize some human {words in addition to body expressions, but most of the ways we behave in addition to communicate seem a minuscule foreign to them~Most dogs can discern some human terms along with body language, but most of the ways we behave as well as communicate seem a little foreign to them~Dogs can recognize some human expressions in addition to body terminology, but most of the ways we behave as well as communicate seem a tiny alien to them}.

Human beings move their hands a lot when they get excited, for case in point. Canine animals know from our language that we’re happy, yet we may show angry to them because on the animal world, quick, exuberant movements more often than not large~commonly~ordinarily~mostly} mean aggression or danger.

When pets don’t do what we tell them to, it’s not because they’re stupid or stubborn; additional likely, they’ve been given confusing signals. Once you understand how pet dogs perceive you, such confusion should decrease.

Most dogs are familiar from the assortment along with volume of their proprietors’ voices, but other voices can be confusing. Pet dogs don’t pay attention to terms so much as to tone in addition to laughter, along with they’re particularly good at comparing voices as well as body languageso people can say one thing while their canines interpret something distinct.

People don’t have to disguise their voices to communicate and a dog, but raising the pitch a miniature can help. To pet’s ears, a higher voice sounds happier along with less threatening. Trainers often recommend using an vivacious, slightly high-pitched tone, because it can help a dog respond and more enthusiasm.

Still, high-pitched voices can sometimes cause problems of their own, especially when used for discipline. If you always use a high-pitched voice to encourage your dog as well as to as a rule large~commonly~ordinarily~mostly} jolly him along, you may find the same tone has mini effect when you are trying to stop him doing something. It’s worth lowering your voice a notch when giving reprimands. Even if you don’t sound angry, the deep, gruff tone will spark your dog’s memories of early authority figures, in addition to he’ll be additional likely to do as you tell him.

Young or submissive a dog are often the ones and high-pitched barks or yelps, while higher-ranking pet dogs are extra likely to give a low growl. Some most dogs get slightly nervous around men as well as deep voices because they associate that pitch from the imposition of authority, or through the reprimands their mothers gave them when they were young.

Most dogs are experts at reading all kinds of body terminology, so they can small while~in next to no time} tell when your terms or tone of voice aren’t telling the whole story. This often happens in vets’ offices, where proprietors try to soothe nervous dogs from the telling them that everything’s okay. The canine know perfectly well that’s not true, with their proprietors’ attempts to give comfort may have mini effect or even confirm the need for alarm.

Similarly, trying to reassure a scared dog who is growling will probably just increase his tension because he’ll interpret soothing terms as support for what he’s doing. He simply won’t understand that his behavior isn’t appropriate. A better approach is to tell your dog sternly to stop it. He’ll respond to the firmness in your voice, as well as will know that {you’ll be~that you will be~that you’re} in charge in addition to that you are be~that you’ll be~that you’re} able to handle items from then on.

When you understand how your dog perceives you in addition to your actions, it will become easier to communicate along with him effectively.

Likewise, if you use a serious voice to tell your dog to stay but a few seconds later give him a wink, he may perceive that you are be~that you’ll be~that you’re} giving him permission to get up plus move around.

Putting on a happy face does come in handy when you want to congratulate a og for following orders. But don’t try to fool canine animals along with “false” expressions, in addition to try not to mix the signals you’re giving. Puppies only feel secure when they know what you’re feeling; mixed signals make them nervous with uncertain.

Canine try to understand people’s language as well as actions by translating human behavior into canine language, which may cause confusion.

It’s weighty to refrain from laughing when puppies have done something wrong, no matter how amusing, because pets interpret laughter as a happy sound that means they have your approval. To keep getting your approval in the course of the future, they’re positive to do the same thing again.

When canine want to learn more about other canine, they focus on carriage. Dog-to-dog messages are clear-cut because both pets are speaking the same vocabulary. But a dog are in foreign territory when they try to decipher most human body language. When dealing in addition to a dog, be aware of your body words along with make definite that it’s communicating the same thing as your voice. The two are likely to be at odds when you’re trying not to come out you will be~that you’ll be~that you’re} cross plus your dog. Even if your voice is calm, your dog will see that your face, arms, in addition to shoulders are stiffall signs that you are be~that you’ll be~that you’re} on edge. He’ll be confused because your message isn’t clear, in addition to he won’t know how to react.

Dogs observe people much extra closely than we ever view them. Should our facial language not match-the other signals that we’re giving, pets get confused. When you’re trying to act stern, for case, but your eyes are twinkling or your mouth is curving into a smile, canines aren’t definite which to believeyour stern voice or your happy facial expression.

It’s normal for us to interpret canine animals’ behavior in human terminology, but our judgments regularly large~commonly~ordinarily~mostly} aren’t awfully accurate. Human beings often swear that their dogs look guilty when they’ve done anything wrong. But as far as we know, pet dogs don’t feel guilt. That means that when you come home with find the trash through the floor plus your dog cowering usually in the corner, you can’t assume that he knows he did something wrong. In all likelihood he’s simply responding to the cross lpok on your face. Or maybe he recalls from previous ability that trash usually in the floor is bad news when you’re around.

The weighty thing is to always make your reaction match the position. If your dog is to understand what you exceedingly mean, he necessitates to be able to make a logical connection between his action and your response. He may not like being corrected, but at least he’ll see that as a predictable response. But starting to scold your dog, then suddenly relenting in addition to indulgently giving his ears a scratch, will seem inconsistent, with that will holiday him confused.

Dog Behavior Problems- Key Issues To Watch Out For

Monday, November 7th, 2011

When you get a new puppy, there are training issues that need to be addressed from the beginning. A puppy is certainly endearing.  However, if authority is not established by the owner from the beginning, the puppy will grow up with destructive behaviors that will be much harder to break as a grown dog. That is why it is best if these dog behavior problems are addressed from the beginning. There are very uncomplicated answers to many of these problem behaviors. Many potential problems will not even occur, if they are tackled the first couple of times that they occur. That is why training should start as soon as the new puppy enters the home. For example making messes inside is best dealt with early on through puppy house training.

Barking

Often individuals will go to a coach to help them deal with many different types of dog behavior problems which can happen. One problem is too much barking. Some dogs just seem to bark at every possible noise.  This could be aimed at a person, any other dog or animal, or just for fun. You, and also the neighbors, can become irritated with this.  This is especially true if the person lives in an apartment or condominium. If you want to know how to stop a dog barking then first start with some basic dog training.

Digging

Digging is another dog behavior problem. This can be a tricky issue to end once it has started and can cause significant damage and even safety concerns if it is not stopped. Digging not only produces holes in the yard, but can destroy gardens Dogs will often dig near the boundary of the yard so that the holes sometimes go beneath the fence, allowing the dog to escape and the possibility of harm to come to your animal.  This digging not only results in holes in the garden, but can ruin a flower bed.

Food aggression

Dog behavior problem related to food aggression can also manifest if there are multiple pets in the family. Some dogs protect their food from the other animals, growling at them to chase them away from their food dish. This is possibly dangerous, as such behavior can lead to biting, and if there are small children in the household, such behavior can also be manifested towards them if they are nearby.

Other dog behavior problems

There is also dog to dog aggression that can take place among specific dogs, especially with two male dogs that are not neutered. In addition to these hostility related troubles, there are also dog behavior problems involving a variety of other concerns such as whining, thieving issues, chewing problems, running away and separation anxiety.

The Azawakh — A Sighthound Dog Breed From Africa

Sunday, November 6th, 2011

The Azawakh is a sighthound dog breed from Africa.

Morphology is very similar to that of the Middle Eastern and South India sight hounds, all swift, high-bred coursing hounds, although there are several obvious differences. For example, a short, flat backbone combined with long legs place the hips higher than the withers. The Azawakh is almond eyed and thin. It moves with a distinctly feline gait and can be found in a assortment of colors as well as varying degrees of refinement, though format is basically unvarying.

Azawakhs are an incredibly healthy coursing hound. Serious coursing injuries are rare. The dogs heal very promptly from injury.

Azawakh have no known incidence of hip dysplasia. There is a low occurrence of adult-onset idiopathic epilepsy in the breed. Wobbler disease or cervical vertebral instability does seldom occur. Some breeders consider this is largely a developmental problem where puppies grow too quickly due to a high-protein western diet.

Like the Basenji and Tibetan Mastiff, the Azawakh often has a single annual estrus. Unassisted birth of 100% healthy puppies is the norm. Litter sizes are usually from 4 to 6 puppies but litters as small as 1 and as large as 8 occur.

Azawakh are pack oriented and form complex social hierarchies. They have tremendous memories and are able to recognize each other after long periods of separation. They can often be found sleeping on top of each other for warmth and companionship.

Bred by the Tuareg, Fula and various other nomads of the Niger, Burkina Fa Sahara and sub-Saharan Sahel in the countries of Mali,so, and southern Algeria, the breed is used there as a sentry dog and to hunt down gazelle and hare at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. The austerity of the Sahel environment has ensured that only the most fit dogs make it and has accentuated the breed’s ruggedness and independence. Unlike some other sighthounds, the Azawakh is more of a pack hunter and they bump down the quarry with hindquarters when it has been tired out. In role of a guard dog, if an Azawakh senses danger it will bark to alert the other members of the pack, and they will gather together as a pack under the lead of the alpha dog, then chase off or assault the predator. The Sloughi, by comparison, is more of an independent lone hunter and has a high hunting instinct.

They are relatively uncommon in Europe and North America but there is a growing band of devotees. Azawakhs have a range of temperaments from lap dog to quite ferocious. Lifelong socialization and firm but gentle handling are critical. Well socialised and trained, they can be good with other dogs, cats, children, and strangers. Azawakh may be registered with the FCI in the USA via the Federaci³n Can³fila de Puerto Rico (FCPR). European FCI clubs and the AKC recognize the FCPR as an acceptable registry. The AKC currently recognizes Azawakh as a Foundation Stock Service breed and they are eligible to participate in AKC-sanctioned Companion & Performance events. The breed will enter the AKC Miscellaneous Class on June 30, 2011. The American Azawakh Association (AAA). is the AKC Parent Club for the Azawakh. Azawakh may be registered with the UKC and ARBA. The breed is not yet registered by CKC. Azawakh are eligible for ASFA and AKC lure coursing and NOFCA open field coursing events.

Recent genetic, blood protein and archaeological studies as well as direct observation in the field offer a glimpse into the origin of the present-day Azawakh breed. He comes out of the population of pariah dogs of sub-Saharan Africa also called bush dogs or basenji–and is also intimately related to the Sloughi of the Maghreb. Despite structural similarities, mitochondrial DNA evidence shows that he is only very distantly related to other sight hounds. Azawakh have a rare glucose isomerase allele (GPIB) that occurs only in foxes, jackals, Italian wolves, Sloughi dogs and a handful of other quite unrelated rare dogs found mostly in Japan. The presence of the GPIB suggests an ancient differentiation of the Azawakh from other dog populations near the base of the dog family tree divergence from wolves or perhaps a uniquely African cross-breeding with local African canids such as jackals. Petroglyph rock art dating from 8,000 to 10,000 years ago during the Green Sahara (also known as the Holocene and Neolithic Subpluvial) shows cursorial dogs in conjunction with hunters. Archaeologists have found dog bones buried in Holocene settlements in the Sahara. At the close of the Holocene Wet Phase in the 4th millennium BCE, the Sahara returned to desert and created a formidable physical barrier to travel. In concert, this evidence suggests that the Azawakh population has a unique genetic heritage that has been largely isolated from other dog populations for millennia.

In the common era the Sahel dogs are almost totally isolated from northern dogs by the Sahara, but the ties to the pariah dogs to the south are extremely close. Azawakh are virtually identical to the Sahel pariah dog population from which they are drawn. In addition to a basic physical structure, the Azawakh share a number of unique traits with the pariah dogs:

  • intense distrust of the unknown
  • strong guarding instinct
  • pack hunting behavior
  • complex social hierarchies
  • unique vocalizations
  • extra pre-molar teeth
  • strong instinct to dig dens

Throughout the Sahel, very elegant puppies can be found among rustic siblings. The Sahel nomads do not have the same breed concepts as in the West and, unlike the Bedouin of the North, do not recognize a strict separation of al hor (noble) from kelb (mongrel) dogs. The nomads behave as an extra level of selection on top of the intense natural selection pressure of the Sahel environment. The approach to selection is diametrically opposed to Western breeding. Instead of selecting which dogs to breed upon maturity, they decide which puppies should live. This approach has the advantage of maintaining a large reservoir of genetic variability and resilience.

The peoples of the Sahel control dam lines and cull puppies heavily at birth according to locally held aesthetic criteria that we do not fully understand. In the Sahel, color is not a selection criterion. The alpha male dog from the local population is usually the sire. Unless it is a wet year, only one puppy from a litter might be selected to live. Females are usually culled unless the family projects a need for more dogs in the time to come.
