One of the amazing hidden ‘secrets’ of this century is xylitol. It is truly astonishing on two points. This 5 carbon sugar can help to prevent both tooth decay and gum disease because the bacteria that eat it cannot utilize xylitol as they can glucose (six carbon table sugar).

Few things in this world are perfect and xylitol does have some drawbacks. Pets should not be given xylitol. While a human being has a special metabolic pathway to digest xylitol, many pets do not. Therefore it can be bad for pets and can even kill them.

A much more interesting delivery system, and one that will take a lot of time and money as far as chicken coop designs go, would be an intricate waterworks system. The system would consist of pipes to a watering bowl and a large water tank. Such systems are usually homemade and expensive to implement. With a huge water supply outside the coop, you’ll have a good way to water your chickens.

The final thing you need to consider, is whether or not you’ll have the water on the ground. If you put the watering bowl in the ground you’ll have few problems. The first issue, is that chickens are barely conscious of there they use the bathroom. This means that they could do it on the ground, or just as easily in their water supply, therefore by having the water supply high up, you’ll stop them from soiling their water. However, you’ll have to think that chickens like to scratch and if your bedding is in their way then they would likely scrape the bedding into the water. Once again, having the trough high up will solve this issue, and is one of the best chicken coop designs you can come up with.

As in any pet care, the wild origins dictate a lot of what is important in Guinea Pig care. The guinea pig is a type of rodent sometimes known as the Cacy. They are not in fact pigs, as their name would have suggested.  They come from the moutains of South America, and research has shown they have been breed from closely related species such as Cavia aperea, C. fulgida, or C. tschudii, so therefore do not exist as a wild species.
The guinea pig plays an important role as both a food source and the culture of many South Americans. Guinea Pigs were domesticated 5000 years ago for food and have appeared in many folk stories and are repeatedly used in metaphors.
They came to Europe in the 16th century by European traders and since then has seen widespread status as a household pet.  In the early days they were seen as an exotic pet and even Queen Elisabeth I had one. They were widely used for biological experimentation since the 17th century, giving way to the metaphor “guinea pig” for a test subject, though more recently they have been replaced by mice and rats.
They are very gentle easy to care for and are easy to handle and feed and are therefore popular with pet sitters. They hate exploring and will not try to escape, even if the cage door is left open (no promises!). They will often whistle when interested, for example when they hear food being prepared or the owner comes near.
There are lots types of domesticated guinea pigs, which differ in hair and color differences. The most normal varieties are the shorthair (or American shorthair), the Abyssinian whose coat is ruffled. More specialist long hair types include the curly long hair Texel and the long haired Sheltie or Peruvian breeds.

So should I choose a Guinea Pig?

They are very sociable animals – so require time for fuss, otherwise they will become lonesome and this might lead to stress and sickness. This could be important if you are buying one for children, on the understanding that they will care for the guinea pig. Consider carefully that they typically live for about five, but may live for 8 years and the Guinness Book of Records has the record age for a guinea pig at 14 years.
Guinea pigs are particularly large for rodents, weighing between 700 and 1200g (1.5-2.5 pounds), and measuring between 20 and 25 cm (8–10 inches) in length. Which means that you need to have more space for the cage. Though as a robust pet, this could be located in a shed or a sheltered corner outside. They put up with cold better than excessive heat. Avoid wire mesh floored crates, as this can hurt their feet and lead to infection.
As for many animals you do not want to put two males together as they will fightfor domination when they are mature at 6 months or so. Females can however be grouped together. Guinea pigs breed easily, so do not add a male to the females.

They are grass eaters, so they have a very long colon to help the digestion. This is however not long enough, so if they are eating a lot of grass you will see them eat their faeces. Like us they cannot synthesise vitamin C and will need to acquire obtrain this through their food, otherwise scurvy will kill them. Scurvy shows itself through sluggishness.  So give them regularly fresh, raw fruits and vegetables (such as cabbage, broccoli, apple, carrot, spinach and celery). Another option is through dietary supplements. They are fussy eaters when mature, so with a young one give a wide variety of foods. They feed continuously, so make sure there is hay in their cage for them to eat.
Guinea pigs, as well as scurvy, can also suffer from respiratory tract infections, diarrhea,  abscesses due to infection (often in the neck, due to hay embedded in the throat, or from external scratches), and infections by lice, mites or fungus.

They are lively throughout the day and will sleep on and off, waking for some activity. Guinea pigs often groom themselves and will groom others.

Many pets you see in pet shops come from different pet breeders. They are the ones who make it their daily job to breed certain types of pets and sell them to pet shops. You may wonder why some pets are expensive and some are not. This could be because some pet breeders breed only one kind of pet. When the pet breeders specialize in just one or two types of pet breeds, their prices obviously would be in a higher range.

Before buying a pet, it is good to do some research on it. Where do you think the pet came from? What is its lineage? Does it have any illness that you should know about? These questions could be asked from the pet breeders as they are the people who’d have all the answers.

It is very important that you know where the pet you like came from. You wouldn’t obviously want it to have come from a pet mill. Animals that live in pet mills are rarely cared for and are physically ill treated. Pets coming from such type of pet breeders wouldn’t be as healthy as a pet coming from a different breeder. This is why it’s essential that you check upon the pet breeders and ask the relevant questions to be sure that the pet breeder isn’t someone who wants to make money but really cares about animals.

Most pet breeders give their best care and attention to the pets and provide them with healthy living conditions. If you think that buying a pet directly from the pet breeders itself is feasible, you could do that instead of wasting time at a pet store.

Breaking a leg for a pet is just as easy to do as when a human does the same. Something like this can be done from falling down the stairs to a simple fall in the garden. But what can you do when this actually happens when you are not with a private animal hospital? Being a member of a vet centre is key as without it you cannot do very much at all when your animal needs care.

One of the plus sides to actually being a member of one of these animal surgery places is that if something worse happens like your animal happens to have its leg needed to be removed they actually have blood transfusions available for pets now so they will not lose any blood if they are hit by a car or something like that and have to have a limb removed.

It is not just animals like cats and dogs that have to have thier limbs removed but it is also true that these animals can carry on in a normal way like the bigger animals. Wheelie the tortoise is perhaps the best example of this as she has to have three of her limbs removed and was then fitted with a set of wheels. Apparently since this has been fitted she has started to mate proving that vets really can do their job well in cases like this.

A cast is of course a much better solution than having to put the animal down which is what will have to happen if a break is simply ignored, it is also best to check to see whether it is a bit of old age arthritis or something more sinisiter like bone cancer. Bone cancer is a very painful thing for a dog or other animal to have and if you suspect something it is far better to have it amputated than to make the animal suffer in pain.

So if it’s a broken leg or even a heart problem a vet will either treat it with a cast or using pet’s cardiology and make your pet feel that much better!

It has long been suspected that smoking and gum disease are interrelated. Thanks to recent studies, that link has finally been proven. We have all long known that smoking is dangerous to your health. It can cause heart disease, including heart attacks. It can lead to strokes and aneurysm. Naturally it can lead to lung and throat cancer, not to mention many others. Your breath smells, your teeth get stained, and respiratory problems and infections are practically a given. As it turns out, smoking can negatively affect your oral health as well.

Smoking is one of the main risk factors associated with gum disease. This because smoking practically opens wide the door for bacteria to flock into your mouth. Bacteria is what ultimately causes gum tissue diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. However, that is not the only reason smoking can lead to gum disease.

Both the smoke which comes from the tobacco and the nicotine in cigarettes can make your blood vessels constrict. That makes it harder and difficult for nutrients and oxygen to get to parts of your body – including your gums and gum tissue.

Smoking is not the only thing which causes this to happen. Chewing tobacco can as well. Further, they can both make it more difficult for your body to adequately fight off infections. Meaning, it cannot stave off the infection which causes gingivitis. If you are a smoker, it could even be more difficult for your body to respond to the proper treatment methods for gm disease.

How can you, as a smoker, decrease your chances for getting gum disease? Well, naturally, you have got to stop smoking. Think of all the aspects of your health smoking will negatively affect? You also need to do your part by rigorously taking care of your teeth. Brushing, flossing, and regular checkups are absolutely necessary.

People in the United States have a problem with their teeth. We are constantly on the lookout for ways to make sure our teeth say healthy. Whether you decide to use dental tape or dental floss, using one or the other is importanl to your oral health. Flossing and using tape will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. This can work to prevent or help end gum disease such as gingivitis and the more advanced periodontitis. The latter is an especially damaging problem, as it can result in tooth loss if left untreated.

The choice between dental floss or tape is a personal one. It all depends on which you like best. It depends, as well, on which you feel works best for you. The important thing is that you use one or the other each day, in conjunction with regular brushing. An oral irrigator is also a great tool. 

The advantage of dental tape, is that it is thicker and bigger. In my opinion, just the pure physics of it, makes it the clear winner to do a better job.

You are, of course, supposed to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Some dentists will tell you to floss twice a day as well, while others say that once is fine. Typically, if you have sensitive gums, you likely have a problem. Healthy gums are not sensitive. Another good tool is an ozone generator. With this device can make an oxygenated mouthwash.

Now, what are the differences between these two dental tools? Well, as most of us know, floss is a thin, waxed or unwaxed string substance which fits between the teeth. It is ideal for getting pieces of food and plaque from between them.

Tape tends to be wider and thicker. Floss can be a bit too thin. That can be a problem for people whose teeth are closely crowded together. Floss tends to fit more easily between tight teeth. Some people even say that it has the ability to remove stains from the teeth.

Whether you decide to use floss or dental tape, make sure you do it regularly. Further more, if doing this makes you gums bleed, talk to your periodontist immediately. Bleeding while flossing is often a sign of gum disease.
